The South is known for its beauty, charm and grandeur, but possibly the most important tradition of any Southern wedding is tradition itself. From the popular to the pristine, we share with you our favourite Southern wedding time-honoured traditions and emerging trends.

 1.       Beating the heat

Southerners love a large, outdoor wedding. Warm weather is a part of their way of life and as such, they know all the tips and tricks to make their guests feel cool and comfortable. Elegant details including engraved wedding fans presented to guests upon arrival, large embroided umbrellas and personal parasols are Southern wedding trends that are being emulated at summer weddings across the nation.

 2.       Sumptuous cuisine

If you’ve ever attended a wedding in the South, you will be aware that what’s on offer at the dining table is one of the most important highlights of the big day. And they rarely disappoint. Seemingly endless mountains of good, southern soul food is served in abundance so that no guest goes home hungry. Sophisticated details including engraved wooden chopping boards and engraved crystal stem cake serving sets add personalised touches to the wedding buffet.

 1.       Delightful décor

It is the detailed touches of elegance and sophistication that truly set Southern weddings in a league of their own. From the ceremony to the celebrations, glamor and class are found in every corner - whether it be the birdcage tealight holders adorning the table tops, or the personalized diamante photo frame acting as your table marker, or possibly the engraved guest book in brush metal silver tone featuring intertwined diamante love hearts, it is the tasteful touches that of a Southern wedding that make for timeless traditions.

2.     Double dessert

One Southern wedding tradition we love is the idea of a groom’s cake. With much of the day focusing on the bride, this is a symbolic gesture from the bride to her new husband to show how well she really knows him and express what he means to her. In addition to the traditional wedding cake, this additional dessert is supposed to specifically represent the groom’s personality, interest and talents. From classic cake toppers to far-out flavours, there are no bounds to creativity as Southern brides strive to impress their man.

 3.     Bury the Bourbon Bottle

Southern folklore states that to ensure good weather on your wedding day, you need to bury a full bottle of bourbon upside down at your wedding venue exactly one month before the big day to keep rain away. It may sound a little superstitious and not too scientific, but for brides relying on sunny skies for outdoor celebrations, it can’t hurt to give it a try.
