Top wedding trends for 2018

As the world holds its collective wedding breath for what will undoubtedly be the nuptial event of the new year – the much-anticipated marriage of Prince Harry to his all-American princess-in-the-making, Meghan Markle – we forecast the top wedding trends for 2018.

In the meantime, we’ll continue to speculate on which of these trends will be included in the royal wedding celebrations, which no doubt will set a few trends of its own.

Increased customization

Industry insiders predict weddings will become increasingly personalized and more intimate. Gone are the days of the mass-produced, one-size-fits-all, assembly line, standard wedding. In 2018, couples will be looking at increased localization including unique locally-sourced produce, native seasonal foliage, smaller bridal parties, and bespoke personalized details to create customized celebrations that reflect their distinct identity.

Wedding dresses: necklines and color
In wedding couture, 2018 is all about the neck. Illusion necklines and high-necked gowns that evoke a vintage feel are tipped to be the hot favorites. Brides are also doing away with the traditional white-ivory palette and instead opting for monochromatic details and black accents. At the other end of the color spectrum, the hottest in dusky hues is Millennial Pink, which we forecast will be a wedding dress winner for some time to come.

Wedding ceremonies: culture club
Keeping on trend with increased customization, couples are choosing to embrace the local traditions and cultural customs of their selected wedding destination and incorporate these into their wedding ceremonies, to further personalize the experience. From the music to the décor, and even their vows, couples will be increasingly interweaving cultural customs throughout their nuptials for maximum impact in 2018.

Flowers and foliage: hangers and pots
Next year it’s not flowers or candles you’ll find lining the aisle of the on-trend bride, but potted plants! Similarly, floral table centerpieces will be replaced with hanging floral arrangements. While table decorations will be simple and chic, hanging florals will be extending from the ceiling to the dance floor. Dark, dramatic colors and textures will replace pastel hues for a vivid and vibrant display.

Wedding receptions: DIY stations and marble dancefloors

As the new year approaches, couples are looking for new ways to entertain their guests – providing original, interactive experiences that add to the individual flavor and flair of their wedding celebrations. DIY drinks stations offer guests all the ingredients to mix their beverage of choice, while DIY sushi and dessert stations continue to rise. An increasingly eclectic mix of games such as croquet, lawn bowls and even darts will dominate, as guests are encouraged to interact and engage like never before.

Personalised wedding setup

Marble dancefloors are the piece de resistance for 2018 receptions, with wedding planners predicting aerial snaps of the bride and groom busting their moves atop the marble will be the coveted Instagram wedding pic in the year ahead.

Wedding cakes: donut delights

Wedding desserts are back in a big way in 2018, with fun and funky taking the cake! One of our favorite tipped-for-the-new year wedding trends is the tiered donut tower in place of a traditional wedding cake. Because who doesn’t love donuts after they’ve said, ‘I do?’
